Thesis (Psy.D.)--The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, 2011.
In recent years, forgiveness as a psychological construct has attracted more attention on the pan of clinicians and researchers alike, as evidenced by an increase in the recent literature regarding the application of forgiveness in a therapeutic setting. While forgiveness as a construct had largely been tied to theological underpinnings previously, its addition to the field of psychology has proliferated in a short time. Self-forgiveness, a related construct, has also been a burgeoning field of interest and both concepts have been the discussion of many quantitative analyses. This dissertation reviews previous understandings of these theories as they are applied to the field of psychology. The application to psychology is applied further as the co-researchers are retired psychologists, which lends to implications both of the self-forgiveness process and its juxtaposition with clinical psychology training. In attempting to understand self-forgiveness as a lived experience through phenomenological exploration, this dissertation seeks to extrapolate from the ontic individual experience to the ontological human process. In doing so, this research will contribute to the conversation of self-forgiveness while respecting the humanness of the process.
