Efforts to decrease atmospheric C content by increasing terrestrial sinks have included land restoration as a means to increase plant growth and improve storage of plant materials in soil organic C pools. This study examines soil chemical and microbiological characteristics on current and former wetland soils. Two former agricultural fields (Flag and Thompson Lakes) established on what were originally wetlands were sampled to evaluate the spatial variability of soil characteristics. These two sites were then sampled one and two years following a change in land use that returned these sites to wetlands following 85 years of soy/corn cultivation. These two agricultural sites were compared to two nearby reference wetlands (a managed wetland and one under cultivation at Rice Lake, IL) on a similar soil type following restoration. Soils from Flag and Thompson were heterogeneous with BD, SOC, N, P and cation concentrations varying spatially, temporally and by depth to a meter. Soils from the former agricultural wetland had diminished C and N contents and increased compaction compared to the managed wetland. The resistant C and N pools, cations, P, and pH were similar to the managed wetland. The reestablishment of moisture was not reflected in the amount vegetative material stabilized, as the LF and POM found at the former Flag and Thompson Lakes were similar to that of the managed wetland at Rice Lake. Former agricultural wetland soils from Flag and Thompson did not differ from agricultural wetland soils in terms of C or N turnover measured following 30 days of incubation and rates were at levels below that of the managed wetland. Additionally, there was no real increase in SOM stabilization as there was little difference in C pool size or turnover. In this system, two years does not appear to have been enough time to restore wetland soil function as suggested by microbiological and chemical analyses.
