For decades, couple relationships have been a subject of interest for many researchers. Two specific areas, individual personality characteristics and attachment styles, seem to have a significant impact on romantic interactions. The similarity perspective hypothesizes that people are attracted to people who are similar to them---"Like begets like". The complementarity perspective, "Opposites Attract," hypothesizes that individuals are attracted to others who are dissimilar to them. This is reflected in psychodynamic theories of couple relationships in which role complementarity and meshing of character structures is seen as unconsciously motivating partner choice. One aspect of the current study is designed to test which of these two perspectives on character traits is most influential in partner choice and, also, how one or the other form of partner choice is associated with relationship satisfaction. Each partner in a romantic dyad also brings his/her own unique attachment style into the relationship. Using John Bowlby's attachment theory, another aspect of this study tested whether individuals chose partners with similar or dissimilar attachment styles, how this choice correlated with relationship satisfaction, and if any gender differences existed in this context.

This study included 91 heterosexual couples that completed a 5-factor personality measure (Revised NEO Personality Inventory), a relationship satisfaction instrument (Dyadic Adjustment Scale), and an attachment measure (Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised). Results of this study demonstrated that individuals chose partners that were similar to them on all the five personality traits. In terms of couples' satisfaction, though, only similarity on the agreeableness trait was an influencing factor. For attachment, individuals chose partners with similar attachment styles (secure vs. insecure) and couples where both partners were securely attached were more satisfied than couples where either one or both partners were insecurely attached. There were also significant age and gender related findings in this study. The issue of similar vs. dissimilar personality traits and attachment styles between couples is more complex than was initially hypothesized. A future work with a more detailed analysis utilizing a larger sample size would aid in elucidating the subtleties of couples' relationships.
