The construct of perfectionism has received considerable attention in the psychological literature (Flett & Hewitt, 2002). Although it has typically been conceptualized as an intrapsychic or personality variable, the more commonly used measures of perfectionism also assess certain interpersonal features of the construct, such as the experience of parental criticism or general expectations that others should similarly conform to one's own high standards and expectations (Frost et al., 1990; Hewitt & Flett, 1991; Slaney et al., 2001). However, until very recently, the perfectionistic beliefs that persons hold regarding their specific intimate partners have not been systematically explored.

Shea et al. (2006) modified one commonly-used measure of perfectionism (the Almost Perfect Scale; APS-R) to form the Dyadic Almost Perfect Scale (DAPS) for assessing dyadic perfectionism, or a person's perfectionistic beliefs and expectations regarding his or her intimate partner. These investigators found that (a) the DAPS scores evidenced a three-factor structure (i.e., Discrepancy, Standards, and Order) that paralleled the structure observed in its parent measure, (b) DAPS subscale scores demonstrated adequate internal consistency reliabilities, and (c) controlling for adult attachment orientations and intrapersonal measures of perfectionism, female participants' DAPS Discrepancy scores were uniquely predictive of concurrent measures of relationship satisfaction. An independent study (Lopez et al., 2006) also established that DAPS scores demonstrated moderate test-retest stabilities and that, controlling for social desirability and adult attachment orientation scores, DAPS Discrepancy scores were prominently related to relationship continuation over a three-month period among college students who were involved in intimate heterosexual relationships.

In light of its apparent promise as a measure of dyadic perfectionism, the present study extended validity-related inquiry of the DAPS by examining links between dyadic perfectionism and more process-oriented measures of relationship styles, problem-solving attitudes, and respect for one's partner. In addition, DAPS associations with adult attachment orientations, intrapersonal (i.e., self-oriented) perfectionism, relationship satisfaction, and commitment were again assessed. Lastly, gender and racial/ethnic differences in DAPS scores, and interactions involving gender, adult attachment scores, and DAPS Discrepancy on these process and outcome indicators of relationship functioning were also explored.

Findings indicated that DAPS scores were generally correlated in expected directions with scores on other key measures. As hypothesized, Discrepancy scores were related to "non-mutual" relationship styles. Also as expected, findings indicated that, when controlling for gender, self-oriented perfectionism, and adult attachment orientations, Discrepancy scores explained significant unique variance on a measure of Respect for Partner and on a composite index of Satisfaction/Commitment. However, contrary to expectations, Discrepancy scores did not uniquely predict scores on measures of constructive or destructive relationship processes. In addition, no significant interactions of gender with either adult attachment orientations or Discrepancy scores on measures of relationship processes and outcomes were observed.
