This study examined the relation between marital processes and child internalizing and externalizing behaviors among European American and Mexican American families across a three year time period. Marital conflict and marital satisfaction were measured as separate components. Results indicated that marital satisfaction and marital conflict were negatively related across time. For fathers, marital conflict was related to child internalizing and externalizing behaviors. However, for mothers, marital satisfaction was related to child internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Some models also revealed that child internalizing and externalizing predicted changes in marital conflict and marital satisfaction across time. Models were also tested using ethnicity as a moderator, and among Mexican American families, level of acculturation was examined as an additional moderator. Results revealed both positive and negative relations between marital conflict, marital satisfaction, and child internalizing and externalizing behaviors among Mexican American families, than among European American families. The implications for theory, research, and application are noted and the importance of including ethnicity in our studies of marital processes and children's adjustment is discussed.
