Four studies were conducted examining language processing in bilinguals, those who use two languages regularly. In three studies, language processing in bilinguals and monolinguals was compared at a global level--the hemispheric specialization for language--using three different techniques. In the first two studies, words were presented differentially to the two hemispheres through tachistoscopic and monaural methods and reaction times were measured. In the third experiment, subjects spoke or read aloud while simultaneously finger tapping with the right or the left hand and the amount of disruption in finger tapping was measured. The subjects were all right-handed males: Half were Portuguese-English bilinguals, and the other half were English-speaking monolinguals. Overall, the results demonstrated that language is lateralized to the left hemisphere to the same extent in monolinguals and bilinguals.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Although language processing at the global level of hemispheric specialization was similar in bilinguals and monolinguals, the bilinguals behaved differently depending on the type of stimuli presented. With monolingual stimuli, that is Portuguese and English words presented in separate blocks, bilinguals were just as quick as monolinguals. However, with mixed stimuli, that is Portuguese and English words presented randomly mixed, bilinguals responded slower than monolinguals.

The fourth study examined lexical access in bilinguals. The time course of word recognition was determined in monolingual, English or Portuguese, and bilingual, code-switching, language environments using the Phoneme-Triggered Lexical Decision task. Stimuli in the code-switching environment respected the linguistic constraints of Portuguese-English code-switching. The results showed that when the bilinguals were in a monolingual language environment, their reaction times to target words were identical to those of monolinguals. However, in the bilingual, code-switching, environment their responses were slower than in the monolingual environment.

In conclusion, these studies demonstrated that at a global level language processing is similar in bilinguals and monolinguals, left hemisphere specialization for language was found in both groups. However, bilinguals behaved differently depending on whether the language environment was monolingual or bilingual. It is this dual aspect of language processing in bilinguals which promises to be a rich area for future research.
