The dichotic listening technique was utilized to investigate the ear advantage of monolingual and bilingual adults for English CV syllables and French monosyllabic words. Sixty, adult, normal hearing, right handed subjects ranging in age from 17 to 52 years participated in this study. The subjects consisted of two groups of 30. The first group, monolinguals, had no prior formal training in the French language. The second group consisted of English/French bilinguals.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a The number of responses for each ear was documented and converted to percentage of correct responses. A right ear advantage for monolingual and bilingual adults was identified for both English CV syllables and French words. The mean percentage of right ear correct responses for English CV syllables was nearly equal for both groups. The major difference between the scores was related to the mean percentage of correct responses for the left ear. A greater magnitude between right and left ear responses was identified for monolinguals. Bilinguals were more bilateral.
520 $a Bilinguals demonstrated a greater nonright ear advantage on English CV syllables (43.3%) than monolinguals (13.3%). When ear advantage for English CV syllables was controlled, a significant difference for responses to the French dichotic stimuli between the two groups was identified.
520 $a The two groups did not differ significantly on responses to English syllables, but did on French words. Bilinguals scored significantly higher on processing French than they did on English. The monolinguals were significantly better on English. No difference in laterality was identified for bilinguals learning French pre-puberty compared to post-puberty.
520 $a The following conclusions were supported by the results of this investigation: Neurologic processing of unfamiliar language stimuli by monolingual adults was the same as for English CV syllables. Bilinguals demonstrated greater right hemisphere contribution to the neurologic processing of both English and French stimuli. For monolinguals, the French dichotic stimuli are nearly as reliable an indicator of right ear advantage as the English dichotic stimuli. For bilinguals, more research with both stimuli is indicated.
