Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, 2013.
Numerous studies have demonstrated the undesirable impacts of neuroticism on leadership performance in relevant task and social domains. The goal of this dissertation is to elucidate the relationships between neuroticism (and its components) and numerous specific leadership competencies that had not yet been investigated to date. This study is quantitative and correlational in design. The knowledge contributed has potential value for top executives, employers, trainers, executive coaches, mental health professionals, and researchers. The participants were 112 female top executives (CEOs, presidents, directors, and other C-level executives). These women completed two self-report instruments administered over the Internet: the EPQ-RS and the MLQ30, measuring Big Five personality traits and transformational and transactional leadership competencies, respectively. Three of four null hypotheses were rejected; neuroticism was negatively correlated with 27 of 30 competencies, and there were numerous significant relationships with three neuroticism components. Numerous recommendations for future research and practical application are offered.
