Information and data have been the driving force behind database development. In this information age, with data growing at increasing rates, data organization has become critical in facilitating processing and management. Distributed databases have made an important technological contribution to how major private and public institutions, governments, companies, and industries manage their data. Distributed databases fit in the geo-political decentralization of local, national, and global organizations. The distributed database literature has mainly focused on exploring the history of database systems, their evolution, and the different industries that have implemented Distributed Databases. This quantitative research study evaluated the processing speed of a distributed database system over an interconnected network. To that end, the t-test analysis was carried out in three distributed environments with respectively two, four, and eight server configurations. Each of the three distributed environments was compared to a centralized database. The t-test results discovered there was significant increase in processing speeds when comparing one, two, four, and eight server configurations. The results can help provide organizations with the benefits of utilizing distributed database system versus centralized systems.
