Thesis (M.A.)--Corcoran College of Art + Design, 2013.
In the past fifty years there has been a dramatic incline of furniture and furnishings in the municipal waste stream. The amount of excess that is terminating in landfills will continue to rise unless there is an intervention that occurs that alters the way that consumers operate. This Thesis will explore markets that have been successful in extending the lifespan of furniture and how their methods can be reinterpreted to the current market. In doing so, the Thesis will also investigate working relationships between the consumer, designer, and craftsperson and propose an updated model that will assist in extending the lifespan of furniture and furnishings. Through fostering collaboration between the consumer, interior designer, and educated craftsperson, it is possible to foster a new culture that values design built for permanence and supports the preservation of quality craftsmanship.
