Thesis (M.S.)--Nyack College, 2013.
This study examined the relationship between interpersonal influence and sense of community as related to recording artist-centered fan club communities. A total of 62 respondents participated in the study by completing a multi-sectioned survey to measure demographics, interpersonal influence and sense of community. Respondents indicated a positive correlation to normative interpersonal influence and overall sense of community. Normatively, existing research was confirmed regarding the positive correlation between interpersonal influence and sense of community though failed to strongly indicate a positive informative correlation related to interpersonal influence, reinforcement of needs, membership and influence subscales of sense of community. Given the strong aspects of conformity, member cohesion, and perception within these voluntary associations, social comparison theory was utilized to determine a positive correlation between interpersonal influence and sense of community thereby confirming the hypothesis. Additional research is recommended for other communities, computer mediated and face-to-face communities, and greater incorporation of informative methods.
