Thesis (Psy.D.)--Alliant International University, 2013.
The focus of this doctoral project is to address the impact of domestic violence exposure on children and adolescents (ages 6 to 18) and offer support for the use of yoga as a complementary treatment method. This project is comprised of information collected through research and interviews with professionals in the mental health field. It includes definitions of domestic violence and domestic violence exposure, the emotional, behavioral, psychological, biological, and physiological consequences of domestic violence exposure in children and adolescents, and the benefits of yoga for treating children and adolescents with a history of domestic violence exposure and other traumas. The goals of this doctoral project are as follows: (1) increase clinicians' understanding of the impact domestic violence has on children and adolescents; (2) increase clinicians' familiarity with the biological effects of trauma on the peripheral nervous system and children's physiological responses to trauma; (3) increase clinicians' familiarity with research on the positive effects of yoga for the body and the mind; and (4) expose clinicians to research that examines the effectiveness of yoga practice as a complementary treatment for trauma and other mental health concerns that may result from exposure to domestic violence.
