Our approach to the world, as a culture and as individuals, is intimately linked to the manner in which we visually engage with it. This dissertation intends to illustrate that sight is a complex function with mythic and sociocultural underpinnings, and that it has evolved as an encounter, functionally and with psychological implications, to the detriment of eros consciousness. Sight and the myth of sight have become unbalanced. The lens through which we see our world has undergone a transformation, and for many years this lens has been dominated by a solar consciousness and a corresponding paradigm that emphasizes logos. This hermeneutical study attempts to show that the myth and function of sight correspond not only to a personal equation involving the psyche of the individual, but also to a deeper mythological equation that involves the psyche and soul of the world, or anima mundi. Restoring eros to sight resituates the individual within this larger world order.

This study draws upon the originary text of a personal dream and through amplification of this dream and a mapping of elements central to it researches the relationship between sight and eros. It explores how the thematic elements of vision, initiation, and eros are imbricated to produce an eroticized visual function and rebalanced condition. This work demonstrates the importance of the reintegration of both the feminine principle and a lunar consciousness that calls upon darkness, an archetypal aspect of the human condition. Within this exploration of darkness is woven the question of the shaman's connection to erotic sight and how the shaman's vision can help the individual to engage more deeply in daily life, honoring the dark and the underworld journeys that are integral to personal development.

This research finds that attention needs to be paid to the myth of sight and to the erotic component within because the creativity of the psyche lies equally and importantly in the function and activity of seeing. As depth psychotherapy seeks to honor the depths and divinity of an inner world, an erotics of sight can be presented as a vital part of this equation.
