The way in which Italian language words have been translated in American menus conceals many cultural processes. The focus of this research is the analysis of the language used in the menus of Italian restaurants in the USA; in particular, deviations from the norm in the use of Italian words and expressions that seem to be the result of language in contact phenomena are analyzed from a linguistic perspective. The current analysis aims to investigate the linguistic convergence between Italian and English, exploring at what linguistic level (morphological, lexical, phonological, or syntactic) the integration between these languages occurs in the menus which have been considered in this work as a genre of written text.
