Introduction: phantoms of José Martí and José Rizal -- Anti-colonial melodramas: gender relations and the discourse of resistance in Noli me tangere and Lucía Jerez -- Theatrical performance in the manifesto: comparative analysis of Martí's "Manifiesto de Montecristi" and Rizal's "Filipinas dentro de cien años" -- Cuban and Filipino calibans confront the modern empire -- Conversations across the Pacific: Masonry, epistolary, and journal writing -- Afterword.

In 1898, both Cuba and the Philippines achieved their independence from Spain and then immediately became targets of US expansionism. This significant book compares the anti-imperial literature and history of Cuba and the Philippines, focusing on the writings of Jose Marti and Jose Rizal, the most prominent nationalist authors. Caught between the two empires, Cubans and Filipinos shared similar colonial experiences as well as anti-imperial struggles. Through literary and historical studies, Koichi Hagimoto argues that Marti and Rizal construct the conceptual framework for an 'intercolonial alliance' at the turn of the century.
