Thesis (Psy.D.)--Michigan School of Professional Psychology, 2013.
This qualitative study employed narrative research methods to investigate the question, "How do social entrepreneurs narrate their memories of creating a social enterprise?" A literature review found that research on social entrepreneurship was in the preliminary stages, and there had been no research from a clinical psychology perspective. Eight social entrepreneurs between the ages of 20 and 49 were interviewed to produce contextual material for analysis. For analysis, the study produced an in-depth individual narrative of a woman's journey to become a social entrepreneur and the challenges thereafter. It also produced a composite narrative of seven social entrepreneurs that highlighted the common themes found within their stories of founding social enterprises. The latter analysis discovered that stories revolve around three main themes: 1) memories about social enterprises developed; 2) relationships influencing the development of the social enterprise; and 3) personal characteristics influencing the development of the social enterprise. This study has implications for social entrepreneurs, clinicians working with social entrepreneurs, and researchers investigating social entrepreneurship and psychology.
