First, we propose a computationally efficient data hiding method for images that achieves Cachin's zero Kullback-Liebler (ZL) divergence criterion for secure steganography. We analyze the security of the proposed method by modeling an image as a Markov chain. We then use simulations to determine the resistance of this method to several practical attacks and steganalysis algorithms.

In the second part of the dissertation we study the important problem of video steganography in the YouTube environment. YouTube is a large scale social medium that allows users to generate and share video content with a wide audience. Its popularity implies that it could be an ideal medium to hide information for wide dissemination. However, the YouTube environment presents a very challenging environment for a hidden message to survive. Hence we propose a robust video data hiding method to resist YouTube compression. The proposed method utilizes the properties of the video in the temporal as well as DCT domain and is an improved version of spread spectrum. Experimental results prove that the decoded bit error rate of the hidden messages is significantly small compared with other methods while keeping the distortion to the original video low.

In the final part of the dissertation we investigate universal steganalysis methods. Universal steganalysis methods refer to a class of stego detecting methods that work for a wide spectrum of steganographic algorithms. We investigate the changes in statistical properties of a stego video and model the stego algorithm as an additive noise for several data hiding schemes. A new method based on singular value decomposition (SVD) is proposed to capture dependency changes for multiple data hiding schemes both in the temporal and spatial domains. The final experiments show that the detection accuracy under different scenarios and the proposed method has better performance than other image steganalysis methods.
