相傳天神搖落楓果而成鄒族族人，為了躲避洪水的侵襲，族人曾一度避居玉山，隨後天神 Hame 引領族人來到阿里山，建立社族，永世安居。然而在阿里山中，還有另一個世代居住在此的族群，牠們和鄒族一樣勇有鮮豔色彩與嘹亮歌喉...牠們便是鳥類。大阿里山區緊鄰玉山及雪山山脈，擁有自然且原始的棲地環境，加上橫跨中、高海拔山區，因此鳥類資源豐富，阿里山地區有超過100種的鳥類。是台灣公認的最佳賞鳥地之一。
