In attempting to bridge the gap between lived experience and larger social, political and historical forces, this project involves reexamining anthropological notions of the limits of cultural analysis on the individual level. It does this by recognizing that interpretive anthropological theory involves an implicit theory of mind which, in effect, defines the sorts of analyses which can be undertaken. This project makes use of the tried-and-true tools, and expands their potential analytical power by bringing into consideration culturally-sanctioned, psychologically-based coping mechanisms, used in combination with material provided by the culture itself. This reevaluation of the contents of culture opens the door to a new set of tools, operating on a psycho-cultural level, which facilitates discussing personal experience in political, historical and institutional terms.

The project applies constructivist notions, which allow for the theoretical conceptualization of alternative aspects of the self that employ different strategies, motivations, and forms of logic in dealing with the problems individuals face. Thai Buddhist culture promotes two different formulations of a decision-making self, based on different conceptions of human life. At the temple, orthodox Thai Buddhism teaches individuals to see themselves as solitary sufferers, isolated from others on the path to Nirvana. At home, however, Thai children are taught to feel obligated to their families and connected to the worlds in which they live. This tension, and its various forms of resolution, affects the ways that Thais think about who they are, and see themselves in relation to their friends and families, their religion, their nation, and the international community to which Thailand is becoming increasingly connected
