In this dissertation, complex fiber Bragg grating structures and the advanced writing set-ups are studied with focus on applications in fiber optical communication systems. The sampled grating's spectral character makes it the ideal technology for WDM systems' multi-channel operation. An 8-channel 25GHz to 4-channel 50GHz interleaver based on sampled uniform grating is discussed. A 7-channel dispersion slope compensator based on a sampled chirped grating with stair-like average index profile is proposed and demonstrated. It can compensate the dispersion slope of a 50GHz system made with Corning LS fiber.

Recent improvement in fiber grating design using inverse theory makes it possible to design a grating's structure from a pre-defined spectrum and group delay response. Most of those gratings have irregular grating amplitude and phase profiles. Based on the translate-and-write concept, a piezo transducer controlled set-up is analyzed in detail. By using this set-up, high reflectivity dispersion gratings with designed dispersion profiles are implemented for the first time.

To further improve the precision and simplify the structure of the writing set-up's control system, a set-up with signal timing controlled modulator is proposed and implemented. Gratings with both simple and complex structures, fabricated with this setup, show that the set-up potentially lead to a new phase for grating writing and other applications.
