The mention of Cuba often brings to mind images of Revolution and Fidel Castro. While the socialist principles of the Revolution have remained steadfast since 1959, a smaller revolution has occurred within the country's educational system. The system of education and related literacy efforts have continually changed to meet the needs of the country's people.

One of the first manifestations of that was the Great Literacy Campaign of 1961 in which literacy workers of all ages and walks of life went into remote regions of the country to teach the poor to read and write. Limited studies have focused on the later outcomes of that historical event. The most recent studies were conducted in the 1970s and 1980s. Limited work since then has focused on literacy efforts in the current Cuban educational system.

This study investigated the nature of ideology and hegemony related to literacy in post-Revolutionary Cuba, specifically since 1990, a time known as the Special Period, a time of economic difficulty for the island nation. Although I was granted only limited access to archives and academic settings, this study is the first to examine specifically the nature of literacy during the Special Period. A qualitative approach framed by critical postmodern paradigms served as the basis for investigation in this study. My data collection and analysis were based on the protocols of grounded theory and dialectical theory construction. A priori theory was a consideration in analysis, but did not become the framework against which all data was evaluated. Sources of data included archival documents, interviews with educators, and observations of Cuban classrooms and academic settings.

The study found that the commitment to literacy and education remains constant since the early efforts of the Literacy Campaign. Educators express pride in their work, and a strong relationship exists between the family/community and academic institutions. Ideology plays a key role in the perpetuation of literacy. This study offers initial insights about the interrelation of ideology and literacy in post-Revolutionary Cuba, particularly the Special Period.
