Thesis (M.S.N.)--Clarkson College, 2003.
The purpose of this descriptive correlational predictive retrospective study was to identify admission, progression and end-of-program variables of practical nursing graduates and success of National Council Licensing Examination-Practical Nurse (NCLEX-PN). The convenience sample consisted of 107 students who attended a rural community college in Michigan from 1996 to 2001. Using Astin's conceptual framework, the input (admission) variables included high school or college grade point average (GPA) and a standardized admission examination, environment (progression and end-of-program) variables included end-of-semester GPAs, cumulative and nursing cumulative GPAs, and a standardized exit examination, and the output variable included NCLEX-PN. Logistic regression was used to determine the variables that were predictive of NCLEX-PN success. Based on the findings, standardized examinations were the only predictors of NCLEX-PN success, several conclusions were offered. Recommendations included a replication study using a larger sample so a greater number of predictive variables reported in previous studies could be analyzed.Subjects--Topical Terms:
