From a cross-national point of view, suicide rates for older women are high in Japan and low in the United States. In the United States, suicide rates for older women may be even unexpectedly low given the presence of many factors related positively to suicide rates. This study provides theoretical explanations for why suicide rates for older women are high in Japan and low in the United States.Subjects--Topical Terms:

In examining these suicide rates, this study also explores an approach to the study of suicide which differs in some ways from the conventional Durkheimian approach. Since the publication of Suicide in 1897, Durkheim has virtually dominated the sociology of suicide. Both recent studies and a careful reading of Suicide, however, suggest a limitation of the conventional Durkheimian approach to the study of suicide for explaining suicide rates. For this reason, this study presents a different approach, which relates suicide rates to general characteristics of societies, and is therefore tentatively called a cultural approach. With this approach, high suicide rates for Japanese older women are explained based on the norm of reciprocity, which is prevalent in Japanese society. Similarly, low suicide rates for American older women are attributed to the sociability of American people, which I consider closely linked to the American core values of equality and achievement.
