The purpose of this phenomenological study was to discover and describe the motivating factors for four Southern singer guitarist songwriters' initial compositions. The central question addressed in this study was: What in the life experiences of the participating songwriters led to their decisions to begin writing songs? The improvement of methods to enhance creativity in the music instructional environment was a goal of the study. Data gathered in interviews that focused on the context within which the musicians wrote their first song was analyzed using a phenomenological approach. Three components of the enabling context for the songwriters were developed: Empowerment (acquiring experiences and skills), Motivation (acting on a desire), and Process (assembling a song, refining it, and reproducing it).Subjects--Topical Terms:
