The purpose of this study was to examine the integrity of the ADHD Rating Scale-IV for use with children from diverse ethnic groups. Parents and teachers of 3rd through 5th graders completed the home and school versions of the ADHD Rating Scale-IV. In addition, the parents completed a rating scale indicating how important it is that children demonstrate control over distinct behaviors represented on the ADHD Rating Scale-IV. Gender and ethnic group differences in the Total score of the ADHD Rating Scale-IV-School version were compared using Analysis of Variance. Significant differences across gender and ethnicity were not noted. Separate Analyses of Variance (ANOVA) were used to compare ethnic group differences using the subscale scores (Inattention and Hyperactivity) of the ADHD Rating Scale-IV-School version. African-American children received significantly higher ratings on the hyperactivity subscale compared to the children from the other ethnic groups. Although not significant, the African-American children also received higher ratings on the inattention subscale. Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) was used to compare ethnic group differences in the parent ratings of the level of importance that children demonstrate control over distinct behaviors related to ADM. The results indicate an ethnic group difference in behavior expectations. The Caucasian parents gave higher ratings on how important it is that children demonstrate control over behaviors related to ADHD. Although some differences in item-factor loadings were noted, the results of a between-groups multisample factor analysis indicate the factor structure of the ADHD Rating Scale-IV-Home version was invariant across the Caucasian, African-American and Hispanic samples in this study. The home and school versions of the ADHD Rating Scale-IV were compared using a within-groups factor analysis. The same items contribute to the same factors for the home and school version of the ADHD Rating Scale-IV. Consistently higher factor loadings were noted on the school version of the ADHD Rating Scale-IV. The results of the various analyses support the use of the ADHD Rating Scale-IV with children from diverse ethnic backgrounds. However, culture does need to be considered when assessing and diagnosing a child with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
