Thesis (M.Ed.)--University of Alaska Anchorage, 2003.
Research in the ideas of self---esteem, worth, and concept---has consistently shown the self to be the essence of a person. There are many factors that form an individual's self-esteem. While for some people self-worth might be based on their intelligence, for others it might be based on their attractiveness or on their virtue. The purpose of this study was to measure whether a relationship exists between an individual's self-esteem and the areas of family support and academic competence. A convenience sample of 42 adults between the ages of 21 and 65 completed the Contingencies of Self-Worth Scale (Crocker, Luhtanen, Wolfe & Bouvrette, 1999) from the Department of Psychology at the University of Michigan. The findings from this study suggest that there is a significant correlation at the .01 level between self-esteem and the variables of family support and academic competence. Recommendations for further study include a longitudinal study with a larger sample size and gender, ethnic and age equity.Subjects--Topical Terms:
