Chapter two surveys the second stage of this musical development, including the May Fourth student protest and its subsequent "New Culture Movement." While resentment of Western colonialism and nationalism gave rise to the left-wing movement, the burgeoning Chinese bourgeoisie and industrialization were the dominant social and economic phenomena. Western music became more popular, particularly among student groups in colleges and universities, culminating with the founding of the Shanghai Conservatory.

Chapter three studies the lives and works of the leading Chinese composers who were educated in the West. While their musical works clearly reveal the source of their influence--mid-nineteenth century German romanticism, both in harmony and style--their efforts in combining Western harmony and musical form with Chinese musical idioms produced refreshing results.

Chapter four concludes the analysis with the musical works of second-generation Chinese composers who followed the footsteps of their predecessors. The Japanese invasion of China and the Second World War interrupted academic musical development in China, thus marking the end of a historical era.
