520 $a The theoretical framework of this research is based on the assumption of rational decision-making and uses a sequential analytical approach allowing for adaptive behavior toward changes in ecological conditions. In estimating the model, maximum-likelihood multinomial logistic regression is employed. In order to examine the effects of areal characteristics as well as those of the individual-level factors, the model is executed by stratifying the three areas.
520 $a Among the individual-level socioeconomic and demographic factors, residence, educational attainment, and experience of abortion are found to have crucial impacts on shaping the patterns of first contraceptive use and the use within given birth intervals. Although the implementation of population policies is shown to enhance significantly the level of contraceptive use, the one-child policy did not produce a strong additional influence. Province-level area has important impacts on the level of contraceptive use. In the bivariate analysis of individual-level socioeconomic and demographic differentials, stratified by three areas, the province-level areal differentials in initiation of contraceptive use still appear strong. With respect to the pattern of method choice, while population policy affects contraceptive use mainly through substantially increasing the probability of women selecting modern methods, the influences of residence and educational attainment are represented by sharp increases in adopting both traditional means and modern methods.
