Bonamia (Convolvulaceae) is a little known genus of approximately 40 species, all of which have tropical distributions except for four Chihuahuan Desert species. This study addresses one of these species, Bonamia ovalifolia (Torr.) Hallier. The big pod bonamia, currently under review for listing as an endangered species by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is a narrow endemic known from two extant populations in Big Bend National Park in Brewster County, Texas and two additional reports from northern Mexico.

Experiments were conducted at the two U.S. populations to obtain a better understanding of the reproductive biology and pollination ecology of this rare morning glory. Based on our observations thus far, B. ovalifolia has a mixed compatibility system, which is dependent upon a pollen vector. Fruit-set is low at both populations, but is significantly lower at the River Road population. Successful fruit-set appears to be restricted first by the breeding system of the plant and secondly by infrequent pollinator activity.
