Air sampling for explosive aerosol/vapors and bioaerosols was conducted inside a compost building during pilot scale windrow composting of soils contaminated with nitroaromatic and nitroamine residues. Explosive samples were also obtained during excavation and screening of these soils. All explosive sample results (N = 24) were reported as

for each of the analytes. For bioaerosols, the median total concentration inside the building using Standard Methods Agar (SMA) was 1,185 cfu/m

(N = 6) and significantly greater (p = 0.026) than the outside concentration representing background (120 cfu/m

(N = 6) and significantly less (p = 0.026) than the outside concentration (1,090 cfu/m

The predominant species detected were Penicillium, Alternaria, and Cladosporium, molds classified as normally mild or non-pathogenic. Bioaerosol concentrations obtained were below any recommended occupational exposure limits.
