In the face of ever increasing challenge and opportunity, spirituality is a potential source of stamina, succor, and success for public school leaders. The purpose of this research project was to investigate whether and in what ways spirituality was an aspect of the leadership behaviors and dispositions of principals who had been recognized as outstanding administrators, and whether employees were aware of or reported being influenced by them.

Contemporary corporate and educational research and school improvement literature increasingly champion the workplace as a source of inner meaning and community, and advocate leadership committed to inner purpose and to a transcendent vision for the organization. A distillation of relevant literature revealed four themes of spiritual leadership, which shaped the research questions investigated through this project: (a) In what ways do the selected principals nurture and rely upon their own spiritual center, or soul? (b) In what ways do these principals influence individual employees to find personal meaning and achieve mastery through their work? (c) In what ways do principals enable and promote connectedness and shared meaning among employees to create meaningful community? And (d) In what ways do principals studied inspire their school's collective commitment to a higher purpose or transcendent cause?

Through a qualitative methodology, the researcher conducted case studies of two principals, to discover how spirituality shaped their leadership. Through principal and employee interviews, employee questionnaires, document analysis, and on site observations, the researcher sought evidence of the four themes of spiritual leadership. Data were coded for words, phrases, or constructs characteristic of the four themes, and are presented in tabulated and narrative form. The result is rich description of spiritual leadership in two unique public school settings.

Indicators of the four themes of spiritual leadership were prevalent in the leadership behaviors and dispositions of both principals, consistent with the context and circumstances within which each of them led. The researcher concludes that spiritual leadership provides the energy and synergy so necessary to employee motivation and fulfillment in today's context of accountability and external control.
