The grounded theory method was used for investigating the teaching practices of elementary classroom teachers. Data-gathering procedures included observations, interviews, and field notes. Thirteen teachers took part in one-on-one or small group discussions. Observations were made formally and informally. The Theory of Mindful Teaching was developed to explain what effective, caring teachers do as they work with students. This research explains how teachers handle the challenges they face daily. It identifies the behaviors practitioners engage in as they anticipate needs and influence change in their students. This process emerges through caring behaviors that result in a recurring complex and integrated network of stages: "observing," "reflecting," "strategizing," and "acting."Subjects--Topical Terms:
