In this qualitative study, the resources and processes involved in the development and maintenance of resilience among former public alternative high school students are explored. These young people have experienced adverse life circumstances and yet have been able to advance to college. The questions addressed are: What resources contribute to the development of resilience? How were these resilience resources developed? What resources are maintained during the participants' college experiences? How have these resilience resources been maintained? Case studies of twelve subjects were developed. The research incorporated in-depth student interviews, teacher interviews, and written documents pertaining to the students' activities and progress. Data analysis was carried out using the constant comparative methods of unitization and categorization to ascertain themes and patterns on resilience development. The data were verified through a triangulation of sources, member checks, and an audit trail. Nine resources are identified as contributing to the development of resilience. These are: significant adult relationships, a sense of personal responsibility, social and problem-solving skills, a sense of competence, expectations and goals, confidence, a sense of humor, and a sense of accomplishment. A significant relationship with a supportive adult was identified as critical for the development of additional resources. The resilience resources developed in the alternative high schools were maintained or enhanced during the students' college experiences. Findings contribute to the limited research on the development of resilience as a dynamic process, the literature on the successes of public alternative school students, and the research associated with effective atypical educational interventions.
