Resilience in the face of adversity was examined in the longitudinal literature and then subdivided into four major contributing categories: coping, competence, self-esteem and creativity. This literature was organized into an intake model for therapists to show how resilient people are affectively, behaviorally, cognitively, and socially. This intake checklist is intended to be used with a traditional intake and to serve as a cue to alert the therapist to areas of greatest strength.Subjects--Topical Terms:

It is assumed that resilience is required to meet the demands of difficult situations. As this ability to bounce back and grow with adversity increases, fewer issues are perceived as threatening, and stressors that are inherent in the life cycle become manageable. Other challenges may actually be sought and welcomed as opportunities for growth.

Resilience is a multidimensional construct which can be impacted by therapeutic intervention in the areas of coping, competence, self-esteem and creativity. The physical baseline of one's resilience in terms of temperament, intelligence, and health are continually raised or lowered by people and events in the environment. The effectiveness with which one copes with these environmental influences, leads to either an increase or decrease in self-esteem and an accompanying increase or decrease in one's willingness to acquire appropriate skills or competencies. Growth is further affected by one's creativity and by how new meaning is found in situations.
