The assertion that those with higher material aspiration levels tend to be less happy is confirmed by the survey responses of American high school seniors in the late eighties to the late nineties. Private materialism as a life goal and happiness as a whole were remarkably constant during the period of study. There were, however, differences among subgroups of seniors in both levels and trends.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Blacks reported having higher material aspirations than whites, but experiencing lower levels of happiness. Those expecting to attend college had marginally lower aspiration levels and marginally higher levels of happiness. Inconsistent with the assertion of an inverse relationship between materialism and happiness, however, males had higher material aspirations and yet were significantly happier than females. The gap in aspirations between blacks and whites narrowed significantly during the period under examination, but the difference in happiness levels failed to narrow at a similar rate.
