Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Dominguez Hills, 2003.
The delicate nature of making a complaint requires the consideration of cultural values as well as the insight of socially acceptable responses. Recent studies by discourse linguists D. Boxer, E. Hatch, and E. Schaefer suggest that there are specific complaint components in American English that make these speech events successful. Non-native speakers who live in North America are at a disadvantage if they are not acquainted with the appropriate means of making a complaint in American English. This paper presents a curricular unit based on teaching the speech event of complaints in American English to adult students of English as a Second Language (ESL). It is divided into three parts: an overview of complaints in American English with its basic schematic structure, a discussion of the importance of teaching this speech event to ESL students, and a description of specific techniques and activities geared towards teaching complaints.Subjects--Topical Terms:
