English learners with differences in discourse conventions may be misinterpreted when interacting in English. One way to understand this fact is to describe conversation behavior through the constraints proposed by Goffman (1981).

A special type of conversational discourse is radio talk. Two radio shows, one from American English and the other from Argentine Spanish, were recorded and transcribed, to compare and contrast the manner in which the conversational constraints proposed by Goffman operate in each language.

The data show that some conversational constraints were not present in the Spanish language at all and others were used similarly in both sets of data. Finally some constraints, although present in both languages, were used in a completely different fashion. Analysis of the data suggests that the differences in function among conversational constraints in both languages could be a direct result of cultural differences. This would explain possible miscommunication between ESL students and native speakers.
