Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Alabama in Huntsville, 2004.
This work investigates mathematical modeling of applications in the field of electro-cardiography. A method for computing the electric potentials on the surface of the body given an electrical source within the heart is presented. This method is commonly referred to as the forward problem of electrocardiography. An analysis of the simulation results reveals that the proposed method performs favorably in comparison with measurements of body surface potentials. The simulation methods presented in this study will be extended in future work to help diagnose defects in the heart's electrical conduction system.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Several steady current problems in lossy conductive volumes are examined. One problem in particular is the computation of the electrical resistance of the human body. Analysis of this problem reveals how currents flow in the body and serves as a test of the mathematical methods that are developed in this work.

Another problem that is investigated is internal heating of the heart muscle (myocardium) during surgical procedures that employ a 500 kHz electrosurgical device. This study shows that the heart of a one year old infant can become overheated to temperatures that are unsafe and potentially lethal under particular conditions of input power and duration of exposure. This study will serve as a basis for further work to generate guidelines for the safe use of electrosurgical devices and to develop a warning system that will alert the attending physician when temperatures within the heart approach dangerous levels.
