Thesis (M.S.)--University of Alaska Anchorage, 2003.
Historically school and employment have been separate and exclusive activities. While this remains true in most industrialized countries, many American teens have begun to participate in the workforce. In existing studies several consequences of this decision have been observed. Unfortunately, there is an absence of research pertaining to business programs that incorporate part-time employment as part of their cooperative learning curriculum. The following study was conducted in efforts to observe the effects of these programs on secondary students' academic performance. Three areas of the students' overall academic performance, course grades, classroom attendance, and pre-post test achievement, were carefully examined. The findings of this study point to a small negative effect of cooperative education on classroom attendance. Both course grades and post test achievement were found to have received no statistical significant effects from participation in cooperative education. This study helps to identify important questions and has implications for parents, teachers, administrators, and students.Subjects--Topical Terms:
