Thesis (M.A.)--University of Georgia, 1998.
With the publication of the National History Standards in 1994, there became an emphasis on the inclusion of multiple perspectives in the teaching of history. Because of the reliance on textbooks in the American history classroom, in order for students to understand different events in history and become more compassionate citizens the textbooks must include multiple perspectives in their prose. This study examined whether textbooks display a Hispanic perspective in certain historical events. Textbooks were examined for their quantity and quality of coverage. Questions, maps, and pictures were also examined in the textbooks. The study found that some texts do offer adequate coverage of Hispanic viewpoints; however, more research is needed in this area.
