This qualitative study is a feminist-informed content analysis of the social construction of women's sexual health in undergraduate college-level human sexuality textbooks published between 2000 and 2002. Textbook material on menopause, women's sexual victimization, and women's sexual dysfunction was analyzed in light of research and perspectives available to authors publishing between 2000 and 2002. Feminist precepts guided the coding, conceptualizations, and interpretations of the discourses. The content analyses yielded regular and distinctive patterns and themes in the descriptions and discussions of women's sexual health.Subjects--Topical Terms:

A feminist reading of the discourses related to menopause, women's experiences of sexual violence, and women's sexual dysfunction found that women's sexual health was constructed as the physical and psychological ability and capacity to perform culturally prescribed roles related to relationships and sexual functions. Women's sexual health was constructed in terms of their participation in intimate relationships, their sexual responsiveness, and their willingness to engage in heterosexual intercourse. According to many of the reviewed excerpts in the textbooks, when women's ideal state of sexual health is jeopardized, the consequences may have pervasive and long-term effects upon women's relational lives and thus may warrant a medicalized response. Therefore, for the most part, the textbooks did not utilize feminist perspectives in their social constructions of women's sexual health.
