The underrepresentation of African Americans and other ethnically/racially diverse populations in the area of mathematics should be a concern in today's society. With the explosion of technology and the fact that the ethnically diverse populations are moving towards the majority, mathematics literacy among this underrepresented population is essential.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This quasi-experimental study investigated the effects of incorporating a study skills component, within pre-algebra, a developmental mathematics course at a historically African American university (HBCU) in Alabama during the fall semester of 2002. The study skills component, which was developed by the researcher, consisted of instructions and assignments given to the students covering topics on time management, goal setting, note-taking, homework completion, test preparation, and reading the prealgebra textbook.

The focus of this study is on how the study skills component effected students' achievement as well as course completion. Six research questions are addressed, four of them dealt with student achievement while the remaining two focused upon course completion. The results of the study showed that although the mean score on achievement for the study skills group was consistently higher than the comparison groups, there were no significant differences among the groups. An association was found between the type of treatment received and course completion. The study had a positive effect upon non-traditional students but a negative effect upon the traditional students.
