Problem. Various researchers wrote about the way ethnic groups are described inaccurately and negatively stereotyped in school textbooks. Unfortunately, the research on the way the Middle East and its people have been inaccurately described and stereotyped in textbooks has almost always been neglected by educational researchers. One of the reasons for this is because there has been little research on this field to start with. Another reason is that there is a relatively small population of people in the U.S. who come from the Middle East. The purpose of this study is: (1) to describe the very recent research on the way the Middle East has been portrayed by American school textbooks, and (2) to use this research as a model to add three time periods which have not been studied.

Method. The methodology that this research uses is a textual analysis of three time periods: 1875--1920 (post civil war to end WWI), 1920--1940 (period during which American schools expanded and in which America's place in larger world became a concern), and 1945--1965 (inter and post war years). The fourth period from 1970 to the present has already been researched by Elizabeth Barlow and William Griswold and will be used as a model to research the other three periods.

Barlow and Griswold discovered incorrect factual information in several areas, and this study will also focus on these areas. Information involving the politics, geography, history, and culture of the Middle East was reported to be biased and to lack important information which would lead readers of school textbooks with negative assumptions about the M2vsb3T.
