Thesis (D.A.)--George Mason University, 2001.
Sections of the Computer Programming Design course, IST153, taught at Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) have a higher than average failure rate compared to the rest of the courses taught at the college. Unfortunately, even students who have successfully taken the Computer Programming Design course are not entering high-level computer programming courses with the required amount of programming design knowledge.

This problem gained more recognition when the main complaint from both the students and the instructors was the course textbook. The textbook---considered a necessary tool to master the content of the course---is inappropriate, and the search for a better textbook has been unsuccessful. The instructors of the IST153 course at all of the NVCC campuses were surveyed in order to determine what the ideal textbook(s) should contain and in what sequence those topics should be taught. Their responses, coupled with the official course requirements, were going to be used to determine the content of an appropriate textbook for the course.

The responses to the individual survey questions were not surprising, yet the final conclusion was somewhat unanticipated. The recommended answer to the problem does not seem to be a new textbook, because a textbook by itself does not seem to be the right teaching tool for this course. Instead, the solution seems to be creating an easily-updateable course workbook that contains all of the material with which the instructors are forced to augment the existing textbook(s), along with sample projects that will be assigned in the higher-level computer programming language courses. Supplementing the current textbook(s) with this teaching tool can be customized for each campus, and most importantly, will increase the student's potential for success.
