Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Texas at Arlington, 2000.
The purpose of this research is to determine the extent of African American representation within fourth grade Texas social studies textbooks beginning in 1953 and continuing through 2003. Twenty-eight textbooks were examined for the quality and quantity of the representation of African American men and women in the text and illustrations to show how that representation has changed over time. This study ascertains how contemporary interpretations of African American history have filtered into primary social studies textbooks. Also included in this research is a review of the Texas textbook adoption process and the influence that this process has on textbooks utilized throughout the country. The individuals that play a role in that process are also reviewed to determine how they impact the adoption process.

It is difficult to determine what is a fair representation of African Americans or any ethnicity within social studies textbooks. The goal is to provide an accurate image of African Americans as well as other ethnicities within history. Historical interpretations should reflect the contributions of a diverse population without creating a hierarchy among ethnicities. Social studies curriculum should include history's shining moments as well as its disappointing feats. Those are the issues that have divided us in the past and have the potential to bring us together in the future.
