The Influence of Manufactured Meaning on Jamestown in History Textbooks Published After 1990 is a study of how meaning is retailed and rolled out with certain inscriptions that serve the commercial domain of the modern publishing world. The aim in this work is neither to denounce nor exalt textbooks but to reveal how symbols inscribe Jamestown (and other history) with a kind of identity that serves mass markets. This research first addressed how publishing practices and historians order meaning, then examined the founding of Jamestown as a product in Houghton Mlfflin, Harcourt Brace and Macmillan/McGraw Hill textbooks (grades 4--5). Next, it identified how the readings serve commercial domains typically obscure from the public. More important, it revealed how meaning is offered up in symbolic form and how to read the meanings as a way to know history in its thickest form.

Utilizing cultural study, the models of John Pauly, Roland Barthes and David Perlmutter were key in developing questions to probe the scenes of Jamestown for symbols that reflected the practices of the textbook worlds. The findings revealed how leading textbook publishers create meanings of national identity and American patriotism to serve mass populations and turn large profits. Moreover, the results underscored that developing a way to read history scripts in textbooks fosters intellectual inquiry, promotes critical literacy and renders social growth.
