This study applied structural equation modeling techniques to the replication and extension of the Fassinger (1985, 1990, O'Brien & Fassinger, 1993) Career Orientation and Career Choice Model of factors affecting non-traditional occupational choices for women. Data on 991 women working as union electrical in the United States was collected. The average of the participants was 34.5. Most of the women, approximately 80%, had at least attended college, with 41% having a college degree.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The effects of ability, agency, gender role attitudes, and school support on career orientation and career choice were examined. Results of the analysis showed partial support for hypotheses 1 and 2 of the study, indicating that agency and liberal role attitudes influenced career satisfaction and career orientation. Hypothesis 3 maintained that career satisfaction and career orientation would reciprocally affect each other; however, the data did not support this hypothesis. Hypothesis 4 proposed that the level of school support for career development would affect both career orientation and career satisfaction, but neither of the paths from school support to career orientation or career satisfaction was significant. Despite the lack of support for hypotheses 3 and 4, the Fassinger model showed a good overall fit for predicting non-traditional occupational career choices of women.
