This thesis explores the issues of political turmoil and landowner displacement, which took place in South Texas between 1755--1860. It also examines the settlement of the Trans-Nueces and the established forms of ranching that were developed prior to the Euro-American onslaught. It also sheds light on the class issues that existed in the Euro-American, Tejano, and Mexican land conflict and to what extent ethnic divisions occurred. Land disputes in Texas eventually triggered a long series of confrontations between Mexico and the Texas rebels as well as war with the United States. Not only did strategic ambitions result in political confrontations along the Rio Grande, but the prospect of controlling the Trans-Nueces held out the opportunity to prosper from a thriving commercial region in South Texas. Additionally, this study will explore the reactions of Tejanos and Mexicans to the conflict, and the measures that they took against the Euro-Texans; and how Tejanos who remained in Texas after 1848 adapted to this new culture and became part of the Trans-Nueces community.Subjects--Topical Terms:
