During her royal progress in the summer of 1575, Queen Elizabeth I of England spent nineteen days at Kenilworth Castle. Her host was Robert Dudley, earl of Leicester, Elizabeth's longstanding favorite and suitor. The entertainments Leicester arranged for her visit to Kenilworth surpassed all other fetes of her reign in both splendor and expense. This dissertation reconstructs the Kenilworth entertainment and examines its cultural significance.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The first chapter describes the entertainment in detail. Drawing on eyewitness accounts of the event, maps, and evidence from the castle site, this chapter identifies the locations of various performances and speculates on the spectators' visual and aural experiences of the event. It also traces the cultural geography of the entertainment by identifying historical and cultural associations attached to certain buildings and sites within the castle grounds and exploring how these associations may have enhanced or altered the meaning of the performances.

The four subsequent chapters examine the cultural significance of the various entertainments. These chapters identify the communities and traditions associated with each of the individual performances and consider the implications of their appearances at Kenilworth.

The author argues that the Kenilworth entertainment was a microcosm of Elizabethan performance. It included many performance forms typical of the Elizabethan era; it was also in itself a performance of the "Elizabethan," creating an idyllic image of contemporary England as a harmonious community under the leadership of Queen Elizabeth and the earl of Leicester.
