Historians during and since the French Revolution have sought explanations for the motivation of the various Revolutionary governments regarding their policies toward the clergy. Yet, little attention has been paid to the male members of the religious orders before and after the National Assembly suppressed them on 13 February 1790. Rather, historians have tended to interpret their apparent willingness to vacate their monasteries as a manifestation of the monastic degeneration which had infested the abbeys before the Revolution and which was evident by the increasing interaction between monks and secular society in the eighteenth century. In order to test the validity of this assumption, this study uses research from national, departmental, and municipal archives to assess the Benedictines of the Congregation of Saint-Maur in upper Normandy before the Revolution to determine whether the associations between these monks and the world beyond their cloister had a negative impact on their religious vocation. This work also takes the innovative approach of tracing the lives of these monks after 1790 to ascertain whether their occupations and actions after the suppression of their Congregation betrayed a discontent with their previous religious identity. The experiences of the Norman Maurists in the eighteenth century and their increased connections with secular society do not reveal an insidious dissatisfaction with their religious vocation which resulted in the absolute abandonment of their religious identity after the 13 February 1790 decree of suppression. Rather, most Maurists continued to maintain connections with their former monastic life in various capacities.Subjects--Topical Terms:
